Where Galaxy is the better choice
- Lots of opponents, right now. Galaxy says over 100,000 games are played on it every day. Backgammon Room is new and has far fewer people online.
- Tournaments. Galaxy runs daily tournaments, rated since July 2026.
- Every device. iPad, Mac, Android and the web as well as iPhone. Backgammon Room is iPhone only for now.
- Deeper analysis for experts. Star looks further ahead, and Star Pro runs rollouts, the long simulations strong players use to settle close decisions.
Where Backgammon Room is different
- Coaching in plain words. The review speaks to someone who knows the rules but has never studied the game: “Big mistake” rather than a symbol, “move one checker from 24 to 17” rather than notation, and your chances of winning rather than equity.
- Bots with a level for everyone. Fifteen characters in five levels, from Mia, who makes plenty of mistakes, to The Cube, the engine at its best. They play offline too.
- Lessons on the real board. Eleven courses of short lessons, from first moves to matches, each one idea in about three minutes. The first three courses are free.
- No coins, no ads. One subscription for unlimited coaching, and no tracking in the app.
- Dice you can check, game by game. Galaxy has published the code that rolls its dice, so anyone can read how it works. In Backgammon Room you can also check the rolls of each game you play: they’re locked before the first roll and can be checked after the last. How the dice work.
You can also use both: one app to play online, one to learn. More apps in backgammon apps for iPhone, compared.
